Questions

How many kanji are in JLPT N5?

There has been no official JLPT kanji list since 2010, but most N5 study lists cover around 80 to 100 kanji. This page lists 123 essential N5 words built from those core kanji, so you learn each kanji the way it is actually used.

What is the best way to learn N5 kanji?

Learn each kanji inside a real word (like ๆ—ฅๆœฌ or ๆฏŽๆ—ฅ), say it out loud, and review it again just before you would forget it. That is how spaced repetition works, and it is what Manekkoโ€™s flashcards do for you.

Do I need to learn hiragana first?

Yes. Kanji readings are written in hiragana, so learn hiragana first. You can start with our hiragana chart.

Is Manekko free?

Yes. Everything on Manekko today is free, including the full Kanji N5 deck.
